Spontaneous Rupture of the SpIenic Vein during Pregnancy

Abstract
Although we occasionally found spontaneous rupture of the spleen and aneurysm of the splenic artery during pregnancy in, the literatures, spontaneous rupture of the splenic vein during pregnancy is very rare condition. We found only two cases of spontaneous rupture of the splenic vein during pregnancy, in the literature.
The etiology of spontaneous rupture of the splenic vein daring pregnancy is uncertain but increased blood volume in the last trimester of pregnancy and vasodilating effect of the proges-terone are assumed.
We recently encountered a 30 year old women in six months gestation who developed an exsanguinating hemorrhage into the peritoneal cavity from spontaneous rupture of the splenic vein without history of trauma. Prompt exploratory laparotomy was done and splenectomy was perfo-rmed. By hysterotomy pregnancy was terminated.
